PUTTING GREEN INSTALLATION TIPS
All the information, guidelines and tips YOU will need to install your very own putting green.
PREPARING THE AREA
You may begin by roughly shaping the area intended for turf with marking paint or by scraping the ground with a shovel.
Kill off remaining grass and mow it down as low as possible. You want to leave the root system to give the area a solid base.
It is not recommended though in some cases necisarry to dig out the grass 4 inches prior to laying material this can be expensive.
Laying the Decomposed Granite
Begin laying your dg make sure that it is grey dg if it is not find a different material ¼ inch rock fine is also ok brown dg is not!! Level the intended area and form any breaks or mounds keeping them proportional to the size of your green. Compact with a vibrotory plate and roller.
LAYING THE WEED BARRIER
Roll out a fiberglass weed barrier over the intended area and tack down the edges every few yards with nails.
Mark the Cups
Mark the weed barrier where you would like your cups to be placed.
Laying the Panels
![]()
Begin at the top center of the putting green and connect a row of panels working towards the bottomcenter of the putting green using panels with holes where you marked the cups on the weed barrier.
Choose a side of the previous row and complete the same process.
When two rows are complete, walk on the panels to ensure there are no weak spots. Wherever you find these weak spots, lift the edge of the panels and spread decomposed granite underneath until the weak spot diminishes.
Begin another row and complete theprevious step after completing each row until every row is complete.
When all panels are connected, use a flat head screwdriver to space each of the panels 1/8 of inch apart. Panels in the shade should be spaced slightly more than panels in sunny areas. Finally, sidewalk chalk can be used to mark the shape of the green on the panels.
Cutting the Panels
Begin cutting the panels with a skillsaw on the line recently drawn. Ensure the skillsaw only cuts slightly into the panels and not the entire way.
Then use a jigsaw to cut through the same line cut with the skillsaw. The shape of the green should then be finished.
Building up the Fringe
Use decomposed granite raise the area around the green to the correct height.
Build up the remainder of the area slightly using a trowel and a hand tamp to ensure the decomposed granite is firm and compact.
Placing the Cups
Lock the plastic cups in the panels that have holes.
Laying the Putting Turf
Roll out the putting turf and make a cut at the desired length.
Seams in the putting turf are not! Recommended for beginners it is complicated and takes skill
Lay your putting turf out on the panels.
Cut of excess leaving two inches of over hang from the panels
Stretch out using carpet kicker and screw in the putting green to the panels every 8 inches
Cut out the shape of the putting green using the panel as your guide.
Laying the Fringe
Roll out the entire roll of fringe turf and cut four foot strips.
Roll up a four foot strip of turf and begin to roll it out over the fringe area. Ensure the grain of the turf is towards the putting green.
Cut about four inches over on the green side and two inches over on the other side.
Repeat until the entire fringe area is covered.
Seaming the Fringe
Begin in one spot and work clockwise. Meet each edge together and fold them back.
Cut a strip of seam tape and peel off the protected layer and fold back the edges of the turf. Repeat this step until all edges are seamed.
Cutting in the Fringe
To cut the fringe fold over the flap that over hangs on the green and slowly cut, checking your work every few inches.
Cut the edge opposite to the green next after nailing the side already cut.
Nailing Down the Fringe
To cut the fringe fold over the flap that over hangs on the green and slowly cut, checking your work every few inches.
Cut the edge opposite to the green next after nailing the side already cut.
Applying the Infill
Spread 30 mesh sand evenly over the intended area and brush it in against the grain to enable the turf to stand up.
Spread 30 mesh rubber evenly over the intended area and brush it in against the grain to enable the turf to stand up and give it a nice cushion.
Finally, Brush the turf against the grain until the desired look is achieved.
